Raising the Bar

Few things can match the joy found by having a dream become reality.  Months ago when the plans were first laid out for Youth Sunday, I wondered if they might be a bit too ambitious, or if we were asking too much from our busy youth.  I am glad that we stuck with it though because it was beautiful how they led us in worship and wonderful getting to see them use their gifts to glorify God.

God has been reminding me, a recovering realist, that I need to not box in what our youth are capable of because time and time again they surprise me.  The second I feel like I have a handle on what they can do I find out I am wrong. I think teenagers’ greatest strength is their passion. They approach life with such zeal and enthusiasm.  When their passions are tapped, or when they are convinced they are needed, then watch out because amazing things can happen!

I think there is a danger in underestimating anyone, not just our youth.  Expecting little from someone is often a self-fulfilling prophecy.  When we don’t think they are capable of something, often they start to believe it too.  In our attempt to avoid disappointments and failure, we avoid some amazing opportunities.  We avoid opportunities to use our gifts and talents, opportunities to bless others, and opportunities to make new relationships, all of which can bring great joy to those involved.

I think it is our call as Disciples of Christ to be dreamers.  Jesus said in John 14:12 “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”  Did you see that?  He said we would do even greater things than what he did because we will have the Holy Spirit living in us, which Jesus mentions later in that same chapter.  So let’s raise the bar and dream big.  Let’s listen together for the plan God has for us and work together to make it a reality.  Like Paul writes in Philippians chapter 3, may we be “straining toward what is ahead,” straining to obtain what God has prepared for us.

Andrew - Not only was Youth Sunday inspiring, but it was another reminder of how God is at work in this time and place. Your work with the Youth is awesome and the result was a God-filled worship done "their way". Amen to that.
