The Front Page

Welcome to the Front Page, the digital cover of the Wayne Press.  Here we will share with you things that can't be captured in our newsletter--videos, music, color photographs--as well as articles that reflect on faith and life.

Lent, Day 1

The season of Lent begins today.  We will embark together on the journey to the cross.  This is a season of repentance, of thoughtfulness and of prayer.  It may be a season when you give something up to remind you of the sacrifice of the cross or a season when you take something on to deepen your faith in God.  Either way, we hope this blog provides a little nourishment for your journey.  Check it each day for a poem, prayer, video or other reflection during the season of Lent.

Today, sit with these words by Rachel Held Evans.  She is a blogger and author and has recently been named to the President's Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Projects.  Her words about Ash Wednesday begin our journey.

"Once a year, on a Wednesday, we mix ashes with oil.  We light candles and confess to one another and to God that we have sinned by what we have done and what we have left undone.  We tell the truth.  Then we smear ashes on our foreheads and together acknowledge the single reality upon which every Catholic and Protestant, believer and atheist, scientist and mystic can agree: "Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return."  It's the only thing we know for sure: we will die."

Perhaps a bit grim, but true.  On this day, we are reminded of our mortality, and reminded of the good news that we are not in control.  We trust in a Creator who made and formed us from the dust and a Creator who is sovereign in this life and the life to come.  Let us begin this walk to the cross together.

Please join us tonight at 6:30 pm for a Soup Supper or at 7:30 pm for a worship service with the imposition of ashes.
