Day 11, Advent

Ruth Santana- Grace is our excecutive presbyter for the Presbytery of Philadephia.  She joined us for adult education in September and was awesome!  Here is her reflection on Mary's magnificat.   Finding a Voice When the Words Don’t Reach “There are moments that the words don’t reach.” This phrase from the Broadway musical, Hamilton, reminds us of those moments when we find ourselves in situations when the height of our joy or the depth of... What I Love Most About Youth Ministry

As I returned home last night after another great youth group, I found myself reflecting on my time in ministry.  Yesterday was the last youth group, and also our senior brunch, for our graduating seniors.  I have had the privilege of ministering to this group of remarkable young men and women for the past 7 years.  It’s hard to believe that when I first came to Wayne Presbyterian as the youth ministry intern, these guys and gals were in 6th grade.  They left a big... God is Here Today Radio Broadcast

That photo you see above is a photo of a handwritten message just next to the pulpit chair at WPC: "God is here."  It is the essence of the Christian story:  God is with us and God is for us.  God is here.  It's also the inspiration behind the name of our new radio broadcast.  If you haven't had an opportunity to dial into WFIL 560 at 8:30 on Sunday mornings, I would encourage you to do soon.  The signal reaches all the way down the shore, north of Allentown and... On Treehouses and Prayer

Learning contemplative prayer is like building a tree house. The romantic notion of the house bewitches amateurs, but the pragmatic reality of the house bests them with complexity. The novice is soon distraught that the prefabricated plans you can buy are hopeless, a prospect made plain by a cursory walk around the betrothed tree with eyes opened for trouble spots, surveying the uneven ground, logging the arrhythmic placement of roots, noting the foolish task of measuring the massive trunk,... Learning to trust…Again

This past Saturday I had the honor of preaching at a prayer breakfast for the Women of St. Paul’s Baptist Church, where the Rev. Dr. Leslie Callahan is the pastor. It was a sermon on prayer based on the parable found in Luke (18:1-8) encouraging the disciples not to lose heart and to pray without ceasing.    It’s the story of a widow and the unjust judge. Jesus speaks about a poor widow with no one in her life to advocate for her. She is desperate. She has no place to go. The only man... Read More

Welcome to the Blog

There are certain things I want to share with the congregation that just don't work on the front page of the Wayne Press.  Sometimes it is a song, like our Oratorio singing the Hallelujah Chorus, sometimes it is an article from the New York Times, sometimes it is a video made by our youth group, and sometimes it's a conversation with a co-worker about their area of expertise (see Aisha Brooks-Lytle's interview coming up later this week). That's why we've started this blog.  It is our... Read More
