Lent 3.8

This week we focus on temptation.  This poem about the disciples in the garden of Gethsemene touches on that theme, to do other than what Christ asks of us.  Gethsemane by Mary Oliver The grass never sleeps. Or the roses. Nor does the lily have a secret eye that shuts until morning. Jesus said, wait with me.  But the disciples slept. The cricket has such splendid fringe on its feet, and it sing, have you noticed, with its whole body,  and heaven knows if it... Read More

Lent 3.7

This week as we sit with the Temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, we will think of our own temptation.  Below is a quote from Dorothy Bass that spoke to that for me: We delude ourselves into believing that if we can just get everything done, if we can only tie up all the loose ends, if we can even once get ahead of the crush, we will prove our worth and establish ourselves in safety. Our problem with time is social, cultural, and economic, to be sure.  But it is also a spiritual... Read More

Lent 3.6

You may have seen this video before, but I like the way it puts some visuals around the story of Jesus in the wilderness.  Notice how Jesus changes and the way they use color to give clues to what is going on.  With the music, it is a reminder that Jesus suffered, both here and on the cross, out of love for humanity. Lent 3.4

This is a lovely, little video made by another church that gives a very simple explanation of Lent.  May it invite you into a deeper walk with God this season and remind you of God's love for us.  (Oh, and worship is at 8:30, 9:30 and 11am tomorrow at our church) Peace, Laurie Read More

Lent 3.3

If you know me at all, you know I coudn't get very far into this season of Lent without sharing something by Walter Brueggemann.  He has a new book out,  A Way Other Than Our Own,  that is a Lenten devotional.  The reading for today says this: Lent is a time when we ask about the meaning of repentance.  Lent could be a time not when we think about all the sin and suffering and self-denial that have been traditional with us, but when we ask in fresh ways what the... Lent 3.2

Each day during Lent, you'll find a reflection for the day.  This year we will have a different theme for each week.  As we head toward the first Sunday in Lent, this week is simply about invitation; the invitation to learn more about what Lent is or to mark this time as different, sacred.  I like this ancient prayer for Lent and hope it guides you to discern how God is calling you to spend this Lent.
