Day 16, Advent

Below is a Psalm from  Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim  by Edward Hayes.  May it fill you with God's spirit this day. An Advent Psalm Awaken, my heart, God's reign is near: the Peaceable Kingdom is in my hands. If the wolf can be the guest of the lamb, and the bear and cow be friends, then no injury or hate can be a guest within the kingdom of my heart. Eden's peace and harmony will only return when first, in my heart, there hides no harm or ruin, for... Read More

Day 15, Advent

Today is the third Sunday of Advent.  Today we light the candle of Joy and hear these words from Isaiah 35, verses 1 through 10. The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the... Read More

Day 14, Advent

In worship on Sunday we read the words from Isaiah, "A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots."  This prophesy pointed us to the coming of Jesus, the one promised from long ago.  In the picture below, we see an interpretation of this prophesy from the Chickasaw/Choctaw worldview.  The branches growing from the star of David lead to Mary cradling Baby Jesus and remind us of the mothers and fathers who came before Jesus... Day 13, Advent

A friend shared this poem with me.  While it is not explicitly about Advent, it invites us to be still and to look for glimpses of God; to be reminded of our God-given self-worth and to walk with confidence into the mystery that is the incarnation.   Walk Slowly by Danna Faulds It only takes a reminder to breathe, a moment to be still, and just like that, something in me settles, softens, makes space for imperfection. The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper and... Read More

Day 12, Advent

Maybe you saw this making its way around the internet a year or so ago.  It's an ad by IKEA in Spanish and it's really beautiful.  In this season of Advent, there is an invitation to be reminded of what is important and essential and what is not.  We put our trust in God, not in the false idols of the world, and trust that God will keep God's promises.  Sure, you have to work through the to-do list, buy the gifts, and do all the stuff that goes with this time of... Day 11, Advent

Ruth Santana- Grace is our excecutive presbyter for the Presbytery of Philadephia.  She joined us for adult education in September and was awesome!  Here is her reflection on Mary's magnificat.   Finding a Voice When the Words Don’t Reach “There are moments that the words don’t reach.” This phrase from the Broadway musical, Hamilton, reminds us of those moments when we find ourselves in situations when the height of our joy or the depth of...
