Advent, Day 8

I have a book of poems by Ann Weems called, Kneeling in Bethlehem. The first poem, "The Coming of God" is one of my favorites.  In fact, I have been known to use it for pretty much every committee, Bible study, staff meeting devotion or anything like that I'm asked to do in Advent.  If you've been on a committee or attended a Bible study that I taught, you've probably heard it.  But it's awesome, so here it is again. The Coming of God Our God is the One who comes to us in... Read More

Advent, Day 7

From time to time, the children's committee sends an e-newsletter to parents of children.  One popped up in my inbox this week and I thought the opening article by Kelli Masters, our director for children's ministry was faithful and inviting.  Here is is for all of you.  It's the most wonderful time of the year!...at least that's what the song says.  Does it feel that way?  Do you look forward to the season of Advent as the peaceful time of reflection and gratitude... Advent, Day 4

This is a prayer by Walter Brueggemann, whose prayers are honest and faithful.  Blessings on your Advent day. God of the seasons, God of the years, God of the eons, Alpha and Omega,  before us and after us.    You promise and we wait: we wait with eager longing, we wait amid doubt and anxiety,  we wait with patience thin and then doubt, and then we take life into our own hands.    We wait because you are the one and the only one.  We wait for... Advent, Day 3

This Sunday, Casey read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, which reminds us that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.”  It reminded me of a story by Jillian Dunham from The New York Times in August of 2014.  Here is an excerpt of her story, “The Unexpected 3 a.m. guests.”  I was certain that the barely intelligible click that woke me one night 11 years ago was the sound of the storm door of my childhood home being opened. Quietly, gently. The dog knew it, too; she... Read More
