Lent, Day 36

A friend shared this with me from a devotional book she's using this lent called, The Ignatian Workout for Lent by Tom Muldoon.  I thought it was a great devotion for the beginning of Holy Week. Agony in the Garden  Luke 22:41-45 is the reading.  "For each of us, there comes a time when the certainties that have guided us in the past are unable to sustain us during crisis. What is remarkable about the synoptic Gospels is their inclusion of such a time in the life of Jesus... Read More

Lent, Day 35

I came across this prayer in a book called, A Book of A Thousand Prayers.   It contains prayers for all sort of occasions.  The authorship of this prayer is unknown. Jesus, Lord of the Journey, we thank you that you set your face firmly towards Jerusalem, with a single eye and pure intention, knowing what lay ahead by never turning aside. Jesus, Lord of the Palms, we thank you  that you enjoyed the Hallelujahs of ordinary people, living fully in that moment... Read More

Lent, Day 34

Tomorrow during worship, the children will process with palms and we will sing Hosanna to Christ the Lord.  There will also be hints of the week to come and the suffering Jesus endures on the Cross.  While we don't always combine Palm and Passion Sundays, I found this short article on the PC(USA) website thoughtful.   ETWEEN HOSANNA AND HALLELUJAH An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Geneva Press, 2003, 111-113) The question is frequently asked,... Lent, Day 33

Our Palm Sunday theme continues with this short prayer from the New Zealand Prayer Book. Jesus, when you rode into Jerusalem the people waved palms with shouts of acclamation. Grant that when the shouting dies we may still walk beside you even to a cross.  Amen. Peace, Laurie Read More

Lent, Day 32

As Palm Sunday approaches, I share with you this short prayer from the Book of Common Worship.   God in highest heaven,  how humbly you enter our world to reign:  in Christ Jesus on dusty road, riding a donkey.  Help us to pave the way for your eternal realm with our prayer and praise, with our service and love, until the very stones cry out at the coming of your new creation;  through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen. May God continue to bless you this Lent.... Read More

Lent, Day 31

Here is the assurance of pardon that followed the prayer I posted yesterday.  May you soak in God's love and forgiveness in these words. Here the good news folks: We are here to worship the God who stretches us beyond our fears and gives us courage to examine them. Who loves us beyond our imagination and teaches us a new kind of openness. Who forgives us beyond what is right or fair or worthy and beckons us to do the same. Whose grace expands and expands until there is no beyond, there is... Read More
