The Rev. Dr. Steven Harberts joined the staff at Wayne Presbyterian Church in 1998 as Senior Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care. Prior to moving to this area with his wife, Denise, Steven served as Senior Pastor and Associate Pastor in Presbyterian churches in Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Richmond, Indiana; and Waterloo and Des Moines, Iowa. Steven also serves on the Board of Directors of Desert Ministries of Palm Beach. His Clinical Pastoral Education was done at Indiana University Methodist Hospital.
Steven and Denise were ‘born and raised’ in Iowa. They have one son, Aaron, who is a television script writer in Los Angeles. Their extended family is in Iowa and they often go ‘home’ for the harvest. They also enjoy fishing trips to Florida, the Great Lakes and Canada. Both Denise and Steven are great cooks, and enjoy serving both church members and staff at their Berwyn home. They are also avid readers. Denise sings in the Chancel Choir and has served as a Deacon and in our Women’s Ministry (WinGs).
Steven earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Tarkio College in Missouri and a Master of Divinity from Dubuque Theological Seminary in Iowa. His father was a Presbyterian pastor and, like him, Steven felt a call from God to enter pastoral ministry. Also like his father, Steven can do ‘all things’ in ministry, but, unlike his dad, chose to do one thing well. The members of Wayne Presbyterian and our regular visitors benefit from Steven’s gifts as a pastoral caregiver; encourager, equipper, counselor, and prayer partner. You’ll find that he also has a twinkle in his eye, and loves to hear – or tell – good stories and tall tales.
