The Chancel Choir leads Sunday morning worship on a weekly basis, forming the foundation of our music program and the backbone of worship. It is an adult choir about 70 members strong, rehearsing Thursdays at 7:30 pm, September through late May under the direction of Dr. Jeff Fowler. Besides weekly worship leadership, the choir performs three or four major works accompanied by full orchestra annually in concert with the Wayne Oratorio Society. Each choral section of the Chancel Choir is supported by a paid professional singer who assists their section in learning and singing the music.

The Chancel Choir is open to adult singers from college age and up, an excellent vehicle for greater personal involvement with those who gather under the roof of Wayne Presbyterian Church. Membership in the church is not necessary.

Singing with a choir is a rewarding and enriching way to serve others. Musically and spiritually, as the choir grows, so do you. When singing, everyday concerns are temporarily put aside as mind, body, and spirit are poured into the task of making music: one song sung for no other purpose than to glorify and enjoy God.

It's one thing to listen to music, but another to make it. If life hasn't presented you with the experience of making the music, then you haven't known the power and joy of being the music. When singing, you are the instrument, you are the song. All your parts matter. Taken to another level, when you lend your voice to a choir, it becomes "not about you": not a bad thing. Consider it.

There are no auditions for Chancel Choir. Some ability to read music is necessary. If you've ever sung in a choir before or taken any music lessons in your life, consider yourself qualified. You know more than you think. The choir has members whose ability to read music runs the gamut, and have all grown and improved by doing. You will as well. Should you fell inadequate at first, hang in there. Allow yourself to be led for now by the director, your soloist-section leader, and by singers who have the advantage of experience.

The Chancel Choir is a talented, dedicated, and joyous group. (We try to look it.) It is the backbone of worship at Wayne Presbyterian Church. Break in. Join. We'd love to have you. Rehearsals are Thursdays, 7:30 to 9:30 pm.

The first rehearsal in the Fall of 2009 is September 10. We traditionally have a pot-luck supper in Chapel Hall at 6:30 pm before that first rehearsal of the season, one hour before the rehearsal at 7:30 pm in the Music Room. If you choose to come to that, just show up or contribute a dish to serve 8. There's no sign up. It's a true pot-luck. Come to the Music Room by 7:30 pm if you simply choose the rehearsal.
