Mission Outreach Interpretation for
Wayne Presbyterian Church (WPC)

Theological Overview. Our Theological Overview is based on the six principles of the Reformed Faith of the Presbyterian Church (USA), these being the Sovereignty of God, the Authority of Scripture, the Lordship of Christ, Justification by Faith, the Priesthood of All Believers, and the Fellowship of the Church. At Wayne Presbyterian Church worship, education, and mission are the framework upon which the rest of the congregation's activities are built. Mission is not simply one of the "many programs" of the church; the church exists for mission, and every program in Wayne Presbyterian Church is a mission program for the changing and transforming of human beings and their communities, in the light of the Gospel.

Mission Commitment. We are also committed to the Six Great Ends of the Church as adopted and taught by the Presbyterian Church (USA), namely,

Proclamation of the Gospel for the Salvation of Humankind

Shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God

Maintenance of divine worship

Preservation of the Truth

Promotion of social righteousness

Exhibition of the kingdom of God to the world

Scriptural Direction. The Bible teaches that we are responsible in how we use the gifts that God has given us to help our brothers and sisters in need.

"Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbor now, don't say, "Come back tomorrow and then I'll help you." - Proverbs 4:27-28

"Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives that need your help." - Isaiah 58:7

"And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did to one of the least of these my bothers and sisters, you were doing it to me'. - Matthew 25:40

Scripture clearly mandates that we share the Gospel of Christ.

"And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." - Acts 1:8

"Go therefore; and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded of you, and remember that I am with you always until the end of the age." - Matthew 28:19-20

God holds us to an even higher standard because we have been so richly blessed and through giving of our time, talent, and treasure, God can bless us even more.

Mission Outreach Goals and Objectives

Our Mission Outreach Program has three (3) goals:

Respond to God's call to reach out to others using our God-given gifts to provide food, shelter, clothing, education and health care. We seek justice, and spiritual nurture and direction for all people;

Adhere to the theological overview as previously expressed in our stated Mission Interpretation; and

Proclaim the love and grace of God in Jesus Christ in word and deed.

The Mission Committee oversees an outreach program that is approved by the Session. The objectives of the program are:

To encourage members of the congregation to minister to persons in the community, the region, the nation, and the world through specific outreach ministries of Wayne Presbyterian Church formed in faithful discernment and response to the will of God;

To identify and establish relationships with mission partners with a demonstrated need for support in five broad areas of ministry: community needs, human needs in urban Philadelphia, global human needs, social justice, and construction needs.

Other boards (Deacons) and ministry groups (e.g., Presbyterian Women, Children's, Youth, and College Ministries) carry out mission activities in addition to the programs detailed in this booklet. Although these other outreach efforts are not directly administered by the Mission Committee of the Session, they are part of an integrated missions program at Wayne Presbyterian Church.

Mission Program Organization

The Mission program is guided spiritually by Interim Pastor Rev. Dr. Ronald B. Fritts as Head of Staff. Ms. Kelli Maravalli, a member of the Wayne Presbyterian Church staff, serves as Director of Mission.

In 2008, the following organizations reported the results of members giving of their time, talents, and treasure to help advance God's kingdom in our community, nation, and the world. Mission Committee

As a standing committee of the session, the Mission Committee is charged with developing and guiding Wayne Presbyterian Church's mission program. Each year, the Session devotes a portion of the church's annual revenue in support of our mission program.

The Mission Committee consists of many members participating as part of a serving team under one of five (5) broad areas of ministry as well as providing support to the mission programs of the Presbyterian Church USA comprised of the Philadelphia presbytery, Synod of the Trinity, and the General Assembly Council in Louisville, KY. We are connected to these bodies through representation by our members and through financial contributions, and we call this Connectional Church mission.

The overall mission program is guided by a steering committee consisting of ministry team chairpersons, serving, or ruling, elders of Session, and a few active Mission Committee members-at-large. Collectively, the Mission Committee includes any member participating on a serving team. There are no special qualifications needed to be a serving team member. Steering Committee members are chosen from the Mission Committee's programs.

The five ministry areas of Wayne Presbyterian Church's Mission Committee and Mission Administration outreach are described below. Listings of the serving teams associated with each of these ministry areas and Wayne Presbyterian Church member contact information are also included.

Community Needs Ministry

Purpose: The purpose of this ministry is to reach out and support established faith-based and social service programs that provide aid to the elderly, homeless, disabled, persons receiving drug and alcohol rehabilitation, ex offenders, troubled children, and free food distribution programs for needy persons and families. Although not strictly a local focus, this ministry team also supports Christian college education through scholarships at local and Presbyterian universities. Community Needs also include faith expressions and life quality enhancement through arts and culture exchanges. It is becoming widely accepted that the arts help raise the standard of living in communities. Wayne Presbyterian Church's "Arts in Mission" outreach has provided some support for both urban and suburban initiatives for disadvantaged persons across age boundaries.

This is an embryonic initiative within Wayne Presbyterian Church that seeks to build upon existing environmental outreach efforts by other groups within Wayne Presbyterian Church such as the Adopt A Road project, the paper conservation program adopted by the Communications and Technology Committee, and energy conservation measure by the Administration Committee. Environmental Justice Ministries, a part of the Compassion, Peace and Justice mission area of the General Assembly Council, bases its work on the 1990 General Assembly policy, "Restoring Creation for Ecology and Justice." Staffing for this office was restored by the 2008 General Assembly after being eliminated in 2006. Help Wayne Presbyterian Church to find sustainable examples of environmental stewardship in our church life and our mission outreach.

Recent accomplishments include construction of a library addition at Cornerstone Christian Academy, kitchen refurbishment at Sherwood Soup Kitchen, wall construction at the Philadelphia Montessori Charter School, home frame construction for shipping to Habitat for Humanity of Philadelphia, and training Wayne Presbyterian Church youth in preparation of home repair service on the Mission Trip to Appalachia this summer.

Good works is a Christian home repair ministry operating in the Coatesville and West Chester region. In 2004, Wayne Presbyterian Church became a "Good Neighbor" church. We renovated a home in West Chester, and that homeowner worked with us to repair the home of an elderly neighbor. Since then, Wayne Presbyterian Church members and others have worked on several homes in West Chester. Two are presently in progress.

MISSION ADMINISTRATION

Connectional Church Support

WPC Liaison: Kelli Maravalli - 610.688.8700, x234

General Assembly Council (www.pcusa.org) - This is the mission arm of PC(USA) and we donate funds designated for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

Synod of the Trinity (www.presbyphl.org) - This Synod represents presbyteries in Pennsylvania, and we donate funds designated for mission use.

Presbytery of Philadelphia (www.presbyphl.org) - As members of this presbytery, Wayne Presbyterian Church mission funds support its ongoing mission ministries:

John Gloucester House (www.jghouse.org) - The John Gloucester House mission is to empower economically disadvantaged young people in the Point Breeze community and beyond by enhancing their educational capability, while ensuring their safety and welfare. The John Gloucester House (JGH) offers community programs throughout the year. Their goal is to create and share in Reverend Martin Luther King's vision of the "beloved community". Working with community partners, JGH is embarking on a renewed vision to improve the educational capabilities of the Point Breeze community's children.

Chester Eastside Ministries (www.chestereastside.org) - Chester Eastside Ministries' Mission is to bring urban and suburban people together in worship and service. Their goal is to render services to those individuals in need of food, clothing, spiritual guidance, and educational and recreational opportunities so they may meet the challenges of life. It is also their aim to convey respect for human dignity and to offer people the opportunity to realize their potential by cultivating their inner strengths, so that they may, in turn, help others to expand their horizons.

Kirkwood Camp and Conference Center (www.kirkwoodcamp.org) - The Philadelphia Presbytery owns 280 acres of woodlands, meadows and foothills straddling Big Pocono Creek near Stroudsburg, PA which makes a delightful locale for week-long Christian camping for elementary, junior high and senior ages. Christian camps, such as Kirkwood, teach the value of God's creation while working and playing together with people from different backgrounds. More seminarians indicate Christian camping as the most significant influence on their decision to pursue ministry than all other categories. Wayne Presbyterian Church members have children who attend Kirkwood, and have been past members of the board of directors.

Church and Evangelism

WPC Liaison: Kelli Maravalli - 610.688.8700, x234

In the past Wayne Presbyterian Church has supported new church development and evangelistic outreach in the presbytery and the region. Broad Street Ministry is an ongoing outreach partner. In 2009, the Mission Administration subcommittee is looking to identify an additional partner to support in this area.

Publications

WPC Liaison: Mary Alice Hamilton - 610.647.0780

Mission Outreach publicity and news is regularly published through the Sunday Bulletin, the Wayne Presbyterian Church newsletter, the Wayne Presbyterian Church website (www.waynepres.org), and the Mission Display Cabinets in the Connector and Davidson Hall corridor. Special publications, including this program booklet, are also implemented by this subcommittee.

Future Initiatives

WPC Liaison: Kelli Maravalli - 610.688.8700, x234

During the year, Wayne Presbyterian Church typically learns of, or is asked for, financial support by persons from groups or organizations serving the needy and disadvantaged. A small portion of the budget is reserved to be able to respond to these requests as they arise.

Administration Expense

WPC Liaison: Kelli Maravalli - 610.688.8700, x234

These monies cover miscellaneous materials and other direct costs to support outreach efforts such as hospitality and honorariums for guest speakers, and retreats or off-site meetings.
