Saturday, November 13, 2010, 2:30 pm ![]() 70 Wayne singers will join forces with singers from the churches of the Presbytery of Philadelphia to form a choir of over 500, "One Joyful Choir," performing in concert at the Kimmel Center conducted by Pearl Shangkuan (Calvin College, Grand Rapids). The concert includes a commissioned work by John Ferguson (St. Olaf College) and intervening texts by Martin Marty, both of whom will participate in the actual concert. Tickets are necessary for this amazing event and will be available through the Kimmel Center after August 1. FIRST CONCERT Saturday & Sunday, December 4 & 5, 2010, 7:30 pm J. S. Bach: CHRISTMAS ORATORIO The familiar Christmas story told in the Gospel of Luke is set to music by Bach in recitative, solos, choruses and chorales. Unlike Handel's Messiah which has historically overshadowed this work, the Christmas Oratorio is wholly based on the account of the birth of the Savior. SECOND CONCERT Saturday & Sunday, March 19 & 20, 2011, 7:30 pm Antonin Dvorak: REQUIEM Dvorak wrote his requiem for the 1891 Birmingham Choral Festival based on the traditional Latin text. Its music is an expression of the awesome and the profound nature of everyman's final journey, and its ultimate joy. THIRD CONCERT Saturday & Sunday, May 14 & 15, 2011, 7:30 pm Franz Josef Haydn: THE CREATION On hearing the music of Handel on one his many trips to England, Haydn was inspired to write an equally large oratorio in English. The original English text was translated into German and was based on the books of Genesis, Psalms, and on Milton's "Paradise Lost."
